Passive Voice (introduction)
Classe de 5e
Cours & Explication
The passive voice focuses on the action or the object, not the person doing it. 🔹 Active vs Passive: • Active: The chef cooks the meal. (sujet = celui qui fait l'action) • Passive: The meal is cooked by the chef. (sujet = celui qui subit l'action) 🔹 Formation of the passive: Subject + verb TO BE (conjugated) + past participle (+ by + agent) 🔹 Present Simple Passive: • Thiéboudienne is eaten all over Senegal. • English is spoken in many countries. • These shoes are made in China. 🔹 Past Simple Passive: • The letter was written by Aminata. • The match was won by the Senegal team. • The houses were built in 2010. 🔹 How to transform Active → Passive: 1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject. 2. Add the correct form of TO BE. 3. Put the verb in past participle form. 4. (Optional) add 'by + agent'. Example: Active: The teacher corrects the exercises. (present) Passive: The exercises are corrected by the teacher. Active: They built this school in 1990. (past) Passive: This school was built in 1990.
Exemples & Pratique
📝 Transformation practice: • Active: Farmers grow rice in the Casamance. Passive: Rice is grown in the Casamance (by farmers). • Active: The students clean the classroom every Friday. Passive: The classroom is cleaned every Friday (by the students). • Active: Léopold Sédar Senghor wrote those poems. Passive: Those poems were written by Léopold Sédar Senghor. • Active: Someone stole my bicycle yesterday. Passive: My bicycle was stolen yesterday. 💡 When to use the passive: • When the 'doer' is unknown: My bag was stolen. • When the 'doer' is obvious: French is spoken in Senegal. • To emphasise the action/result, not the person.

Complete the passive: English ___ (speak) in many African countries.
Correction
English is spoken in many African countries.
Translate using the passive: Le thiéboudienne est mangé dans tout le Sénégal. Ces voitures ont été fabriquées au Japon.
Correction
Thiéboudienne is eaten all over Senegal. These cars were made in Japan.
Why do we use the passive when we say 'My phone was stolen'?
Correction
Because we don't know who stole it — the 'doer' is unknown. The passive lets us focus on what happened (the phone being stolen) rather than who did it.
