When do you use 'Yours sincerely' vs 'Yours faithfully'?
Correction
'Yours sincerely' is used when you know the name of the recipient (Dear Mr Diop). 'Yours faithfully' is used when you do not know the name (Dear Sir or Madam). This is a standard British English rule.
Rewrite informally to formally: 'Hi! I'm writing cos I wanna know if the job's still available.'
Correction
Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to enquire whether the position advertised is still available.
What is the purpose of the first paragraph in a formal letter?
Correction
The first paragraph clearly states the purpose of the letter. The reader must immediately understand why you are writing without having to read the whole letter: 'I am writing to apply for...', 'I am writing to complain about...', 'I am writing to enquire about...'
Write a formal email subject line and opening for a complaint about a faulty product.
Correction
Subject: Complaint regarding faulty product — Order No. 2026-041. Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with a product I purchased from your company on 1 April 2026. I regret to inform you that the item arrived damaged.
Why should formal letters avoid contractions?
Correction
Contractions (I'm, don't, can't) are features of informal, spoken English. Avoiding them in formal writing creates a more professional, respectful tone appropriate for official or business communication. They signal that the writer is educated and respects the formal register expected.
