Lesson 7 : Reading Comprehension — Strategies and Text Types
Classe de 1ère
Cours & Explication
Exemples & Pratique
Exercice 1 : Lisez ce texte et répondez. 'Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. Rising temperatures, caused mainly by greenhouse gas emissions, are leading to more frequent extreme weather events. Scientists warn that without immediate action, the consequences could be irreversible.' 1. What is the main idea of the text? 2. What causes rising temperatures according to the text? 3. Find a word that means 'impossible to undo'. 4. What is the tone of the text? Justify.
What is the difference between skimming and scanning?
Correction
Skimming means reading quickly to get the general idea or main theme of a text — you don't read every word. Scanning means looking through a text rapidly to find a specific piece of information (a name, date, figure, keyword) without reading everything. Both are efficient reading strategies for different purposes.
What is a topic sentence?
Correction
A topic sentence is the main idea sentence of a paragraph, usually placed at the beginning. It tells the reader what the paragraph is about and is supported by the sentences that follow. Identifying topic sentences helps you understand the structure and argument of a text.
How do you identify the tone of a text?
Correction
Tone is the writer's attitude toward the subject or reader, conveyed through word choice (diction), sentence structure, and content. Look for emotional or evaluative words: negative adjectives signal a critical tone, strong imperatives suggest urgency or persuasion, balanced language suggests neutrality. Common tones: informative, critical, ironic, persuasive, optimistic, pessimistic, formal, informal.
