Lesson 8 : Writing a Coherent Paragraph — Topic, Support, Conclusion
Classe de 1ère
Cours & Explication
Un bon paragraphe en anglais suit la structure TCS : Topic — Support — Conclusion. 1. Topic sentence : énonce l'idée principale (souvent la première phrase). 2. Supporting sentences : développent l'idée avec des exemples, faits, explications, citations. 3. Concluding sentence : résume ou donne une perspective finale sur l'idée du paragraphe. Cohérence : les idées s'enchaînent logiquement. Cohésion : utilisation de connecteurs (linkers) pour relier les phrases et les idées. Connecteurs utiles : Addition : furthermore, moreover, in addition, also. Contraste : however, nevertheless, on the other hand, yet. Cause : because, since, as, due to. Conséquence : therefore, thus, as a result, consequently. Exemple : for instance, for example, such as. Conclusion : in conclusion, to sum up, overall, in short. Évitez les répétitions de mots — utilisez des synonymes et des pronoms de substitution.
Exemples & Pratique
Exercice 1 : Rédigez un paragraphe de 5-6 phrases sur le sujet suivant en utilisant la structure TCS. Sujet : 'The importance of learning English in Senegal.' Exercice 2 : Lisez ce paragraphe et identifiez la topic sentence, les supporting sentences et la concluding sentence. 'Education is the key to development. In Senegal, access to quality education has improved significantly over the past decade. More schools have been built in rural areas, and the government has increased its investment in teacher training. As a result, literacy rates have risen considerably. Clearly, continued investment in education will drive the country's future growth.'
Exercices Corrigés
What makes a paragraph coherent and cohesive?
Correction
Coherence means all sentences relate to one central idea (the topic sentence) and ideas flow logically. Cohesion refers to the grammatical and lexical links between sentences — use of pronouns (it, they, this), synonyms, linking words (however, therefore, furthermore), and repetition of key words. A coherent paragraph has one clear focus; a cohesive paragraph reads smoothly and naturally.
How do you write a strong topic sentence?
Correction
A strong topic sentence: (1) states the main idea of the paragraph clearly; (2) is specific enough to guide the paragraph; (3) is a complete sentence; (4) does not give examples or details — those come in the supporting sentences. Example: 'Social media has both positive and negative effects on young people.'
