Lesson 9 : Essay Writing — Argumentative and Discursive Essays
Classe de 1ère
Cours & Explication
Utilisez : 'It can be argued that...', 'There is no doubt that...', 'It is widely believed that...', 'While some claim...', 'Evidence suggests that...'
Exemples & Pratique
Exercice 1 : Rédigez un plan détaillé (outline) pour ce sujet. 'Some people think that technology is making us less social. Do you agree?' Exercice 2 : Rédigez une introduction complète (4-5 phrases) pour ce sujet : 'Should smartphones be banned in schools?' Votre introduction doit inclure : accroche générale + contexte + thesis statement.
Exercices Corrigés
What is a thesis statement and where should it appear?
Correction
A thesis statement is a clear, concise sentence that expresses the main argument or position of your essay. It should appear at the end of the introduction paragraph. It tells the reader what the essay will argue and how it will be organized. Example: 'Although social media connects people worldwide, its overuse can lead to isolation and anxiety among young people.'
What is the difference between an argumentative and a discursive essay?
Correction
A discursive (for-and-against) essay explores both sides of an issue fairly and objectively, often without a strong personal conclusion. An argumentative (opinion) essay defends a clear personal position from the start, using evidence and reasoning to persuade the reader. BAC questions often ask for opinions — use the argumentative format.
How do you write an effective conclusion for a BAC English essay?
Correction
A good conclusion: (1) restates the thesis in different words; (2) summarizes the main points briefly without adding new information; (3) ends with a strong final statement — a prediction, a call to action, or a broader perspective. Avoid starting with 'In conclusion, I think...' — prefer 'In conclusion, it is evident that...'
