Anglais — Terminale
The Novel — Theme, Character and Narrative Technique
Classe de Terminale
Cours & Explication
Analysing a novel at Terminale level requires understanding both content and craft. Theme : the central idea or message of a novel. Common themes : identity, freedom, power, love, justice, colonialism, coming-of-age. Character analysis : protagonist (main character), antagonist, foil (contrast character), round character (complex), flat character (one-dimensional). Character development : static (unchanged) vs dynamic (changed by events). Narrative technique : Point of view : first person (I — intimate, subjective), third person limited (follows one character), third person omniscient (all-knowing narrator). Narrative voice : reliable or unreliable narrator. Narrative time : chronological, in medias res, flashback (analepse), flashforward (prolepse). Setting : time, place, atmosphere — contributes to theme and character. Symbolism : objects or events that represent abstract ideas. African novels often studied at BAC Terminale : L'Aventure ambiguë (Kane), Une si longue lettre (Bâ), Les Bouts de bois de Dieu (Sembène).
Exemples & Pratique
Exercise 1 : Choose a novel you have studied and answer: 1. Who is the protagonist? Describe their character arc (beginning → end). 2. Identify the two main themes and explain how they are developed. 3. What narrative point of view is used and what effect does it create? 4. Identify one symbol in the novel and explain its meaning. Exercise 2 : Write a character analysis paragraph (150 words) on Samba Diallo from L'Aventure ambiguë or Ramatoulaye from Une si longue lettre.
Exercices Corrigés
What is an unreliable narrator and what effect does it create?
Correction
An unreliable narrator is one whose account of events cannot be fully trusted — due to limited knowledge, bias, self-deception, or youth/inexperience. Effect: the reader must read critically, questioning the narrator's version. This creates dramatic irony (reader knows more than the narrator), and forces reflection on perspective and subjectivity. Example: a narrator who consistently justifies their harmful actions.
How does setting contribute to theme in a novel?
Correction
Setting (time, place, atmosphere) reinforces theme by providing context and symbolism. Example: in L'Aventure ambiguë, the contrast between the African village and Paris symbolises the clash of cultures. The physical journey mirrors the spiritual journey. A dark, oppressive setting can reinforce themes of confinement or injustice; an open, natural setting can suggest freedom or authenticity.
How do you write a strong literary analysis paragraph?
Correction
Use the PEEL structure: Point (state your argument) → Evidence (quote from text) → Explanation (analyse the quote: language, technique, effect) → Link (connect back to theme/thesis). Example: 'Samba Diallo is presented as a divided character. [P] Kane writes he is an 'être hybride' [E] — the French word hybrid suggesting he belongs to neither world, like a species torn between two ecosystems. [Exp] This encapsulates the novel's central theme of cultural alienation.' [L]
