Anglais — 6e
Articles (a, an, the)
Classe de 6e
Cours & Explication
Articles are small words placed before nouns. 🔹 Indefinite articles — A / AN (un, une) : • A — used before words starting with a consonant. Examples: a book, a pen, a cat, a teacher • AN — used before words starting with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). Examples: an apple, an elephant, an orange, an hour 🔹 Definite article — THE (le, la, les) : • THE is used for specific things already known. Examples: the book (le livre précis), the teacher (le prof en question) • THE is used before unique things: the sun, the moon, the ocean 🔹 When NOT to use an article: • Before languages: I speak English. (pas 'the English') • Before subjects at school: I like Maths. • Before names: My name is Fatou. (pas 'the Fatou') 🔹 Règle A ou AN : On écoute le SON, pas la lettre écrite : • a university (u se prononce 'you', consonne) • an hour (h est muet, commence par un son voyelle)
Exemples & Pratique
📝 Exemples : • I have a book and a pen. (un livre et un stylo — non spécifiques) • The book on my desk is blue. (le livre précis sur mon bureau) • She is an excellent student. (une excellente élève) • I can see the sun today. (le soleil — unique) • He has an orange and a banana. (une orange, une banane) 💡 Astuce : • A / AN = première mention (on parle de quelque chose pour la 1ère fois) • THE = deuxième mention ou chose unique Example: I have a cat. The cat is black. (D'abord 'a cat', puis 'the cat')

an elephant, a dog, an apple, a house, an orange
Fill in with a, an or the: I have ___ book. ___ book is very interesting.
Correction
I have a book. The book is very interesting.
Correct the mistake: She is an student.
Correction
She is a student. (student begins with 'st' — a consonant sound)
Translate: J'ai un chien. Le chien s'appelle Rex.
Correction
I have a dog. The dog's name is Rex.
Why do we say 'the sun' but 'a book'?
Correction
We say 'the sun' because it is unique (there is only one sun). We say 'a book' because there are many books, and we're not talking about a specific one.
